Pomocanthus arcuatus

Gray Angel Fish - Pomocanthus arcuatus:

Found at the depths ranging from 2-30 meters among the coral reefs in the western Atlantic ocean, the gray angel fish Pomocanthus arcuatus is found in the areas ranging from New England of United states, south to Rio de Janeiro of Brazil, including the West Indies and occasionally in the Gulf of Mexico. The reefs provide them protection from predators, while the young ones traverse shallow, grassy patches. Its is often confused with the French angelfish (Pomocanthus paru) which is also found in the same geographical range. The gray angelfish has a small mouth with comb like teeth and a lower jaw which extends further than the upper. The body is made of thin and disc shaped. This omnivorous fish likes a buffet of sponges, algae invertebrates. The young ones also eat ectoparasites that they remove from other fishes like snappers, morays, grunts etc. These types of gray angelfish releases 25000 - 75000 eggs after every spawning event, which occurs in deep reef areas in the early morning hours. The larvae survive in the beds of floating plankton until they become approximately 15 mm in size, after which they settle onto the coral reefs...
